UNWTO Report: Vaccination for Relaunch Tourism

According to a report by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the global economy could lose more than $4 trillion for the years 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. However, there is a chance to rebound international travel in the second half of 2021. The greatest chances to restore the industry will have countries where the majority of residents will receive vaccinations against COVID-19 and will develop herd immunity.

The report showed that countries with the lowest vaccination rates in the population often have the highest number of entry restrictions, indicating a direct correlation between the rate of vaccination of the population and the easing of restrictions.

The report suggests that the tourism sector is to recover faster in France, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States due to the high rates of vaccination of the population. Traveling to Asia and Africa will continue to show a lower level of confidence among travelers due to the low percentage of fully vaccinated residents.

According to UNWTO forecasts, in 2021 the situation with world tourism can develop based on three scenarios:

- In keeping with the first scenario, the tourist flow will be 75% less compared to the 2019 level, and in this case, the tourism sector will receive less than $ 2.4 trillion.
- The second option is that the activity of travelers will decrease by 63%, and the tourist business will lose profits for 1.7 trillion dollars.
- Under the third scenario, tourism in countries with relatively high vaccination rates is expected to decrease by 37% in and up to 75% in countries, where mass vaccinations are less active.

In this regard, UNWTO assumes that in order to restart world tourism and achieve a positive scenario in the near future, countries need to develop herd immunity to ensure the safety of citizens and prospective tourists.

New decree the Chief Sanitary Doctor of the RK was signed on June 22, 2021, according to which every worker in the service sector of Kazakhstan must be vaccinated and ensure the safety of visitors of their facilities. Which, as we can see from the UNWTO report, is in line with all international practices.

Take care of yourself!
