Every year, Lonely Planet a major publisher and online resource specializing in publishing travel guides and creating content on tourist topics makes a rating of destinations for affordable travel.
Thanks to its rural homestays, Kazakhstan won the nomination "Best tourist accommodation" in the category "Communities". As the portal emphasizes, foreigners are attracted to the country by the renewed interest in the heritage of the Great Silk Road.
While the Lonely Planet normally issues lists including the best countries, cities, and regions, the 2021 offering is split into three new categories: Best in Sustainability, Best in Community, and Best in Diversity.
Gothenburg, Sweden was crowned the best sustainable city stay; Greece named the best food destination. The UK was awarded as the Best Tour for its "Invisible Cities", a social enterprise providing people affected by homelessness the opportunity to become tour guides in their own city.
