Тhe World Chess Championship 2023

From April 7 to May 1, 2023, the World Chess Championship 2023 will be held in the capital of Kazakhstan. This competition is one of the most anticipated events in the chess calendar since it will determine the next World Chess Champion.

The championship will consist of 14 games with a time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 15 minutes for the remaining moves with an addition of 30 seconds per move, starting from the 61st. In case of a tie, the Champion would be determined in a rapid chess playoff.

The prize fund will be 2 million euros.

The other leading contender for the World Championship match was Argentina, Mexico, and China, which also showed their interest. However, the bid received from the capital of Kazakhstan had apparent advantages due to its geographical location and experience in conducting world chess competitions.

Astana has a rich tradition of hosting chess tournaments of the highest level. For example, in September 2022, the 1st stage of the Women's Chess Grand Prix was held here, the winner of which was Yekaterina Lagno. Furthermore, in March 2019, Astana became the FIDE World Team Chess Championship venue.
